MARK GROTJAHN
BIO
(b. 1968, United States) Mark Grotjahn is among the most accomplished and preeminent painters of his generation. His butterfly motif expounds upon the histories of perspective and illusion in painting through exhaustive application of multiple vanishing points and optical variations in light, color and material. The more recent "face" paintings merge his abstract geometric forms with dense clusters of radiating and sculpted lines producing haunting and delirious forms of figuration. Mark Grotjahn was born in 1968 in Pasadena, California. Solo exhibitions include the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2005); the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2006); Kunstmuseum Thun, Switzerland (2007); Gagosian Gallery, London (2009); Blum and Poe, Los Angeles (2010); and Anton Kern Gallery, New York (2011). He will be the subject of a solo exhibition at the Aspen Art Museum in the spring of 2012 which will present his butterfly and face paintings jointly. He is represented by Gagosian Gallery in London, Paris, and Rome, Anton Kern Gallery in New York, Blum and Poe Gallery in Los Angeles, and Shane Campbell Gallery in Chicago.
